Daddy, My Hero

Chp. 4 - Timeline

Timeline of Main Events

Early Childhood (Approx. Age 3)

Daughter’s 3rd Birthday:Mommy dresses the daughter in a frilly dress with a giant bow and a netted crinoline.

Daddy performs the ritual of tying her bows and shoelaces, making them “super tight.”

Mommy has purchased a creatively decorated birthday cake shaped like a dress with a Barbie doll in the center.

Family friends are expected for the party, where children will play games like “duck, duck goose” and “musical chairs,” while parents socialize.

Filming a Birthday Memory: Before the party, Daddy takes his daughter to the garden to film a memory.

He instructs her to walk towards him, stop, and touch the roses.

The daughter accidentally pricks her finger on a thorn and makes an “ouch!” face.

Daddy laughs tenderly and films the entire episode, saying it makes the memory “even more precious.”

Daddy tells his daughter she will grow up to be “as beautiful as Mommy.”

Elementary School Years

The “Ugly, Awkward Stage”: The daughter experiences a period where she perceives herself as “overwhelmingly ugly and awkward.”

She hunches her shoulders, trying to disappear.

A specific “horrifying school photo” is taken, featuring a “dreadful little boy pixie-cut” and a “wretched green plaid shirt dress,” which forever cements her disdain for that shade of green.

Despite her self-perception and outward appearance, Daddy consistently makes her feel beautiful and expresses his adoration for her through kind words, hugs, and kisses.

Teenage Years

“Search and Destroy Mission”: As a teenager, the daughter actively seeks out and shreds the “dreaded snapshots” from her awkward stage to erase the visual evidence, feeling it was an act of “desperate self-preservation.”

Years Later (Adult Reflection)

The daughter reflects on her Daddy’s unique perception, realizing he saw her beauty despite her own self-doubt and the “ugly” photos.

She finds the verse 1 Samuel 16:7b, which she feels perfectly encapsulates her Daddy’s extraordinary gift of “seeing with the heart” rather than just outward appearance.

Cast of Characters

The Daughter (Narrator): The central figure and narrator of the excerpts. She recounts her childhood experiences, particularly her “ugly, awkward stage” and her Daddy’s unwavering love and perception of her beauty. She is initially self-conscious about her appearance but gains confidence from her father’s adoration. As an adult, she reflects on the profound impact of her father’s “rose-colored Daddy-glasses” on her self-worth and understanding of love.

Daddy: The daughter’s father, portrayed as a deeply loving, gentle, and adoring parent. He sees his daughter through “super-magical, specially tailored ‘rose-colored Daddy-glasses’,” always perceiving her as beautiful, regardless of her outward appearance. He is an anchor of security, a source of unconditional love, and the one who performs cherished rituals like tying bows. He also deeply admires his wife.

Mommy: The daughter’s mother, described as beautiful and admired by Daddy. She prepares for the daughter’s 3rd birthday party by dressing her in a frilly dress and buying an elaborate Barbie doll cake.

Adonai: A divine figure referenced in the Bible verse 1 Samuel 16:7b, used by the narrator to draw a parallel to her Daddy’s ability to “look at the heart” rather than just outward appearance.
